Inwardly Strong, Outwardly Focused

Lately we are all about getting back to some Christian basics. As a church we are tailoring our ministries around two gospel basics: the call to be both inwardly strong and outwardly focused.  That theme traces back to Jesus’ response to the rich young ruler, “What must I do to gain eternal life?” “Love God,” said the Lord, “and love your neighbor.” We gain strength in our faith through loving Christ, then we apply that strength to the broken, the physically and emotionally needy, and to the faint of heart.

A primary purpose of our Mission Commission is to provide opportunities for our church to be outwardly focused through involvement in hands on missions.  We’re gaining strength through new missions such as national and international trips to New Orleans for flood recovery and to Honduras for medical community work. Our local mission include the CALL Center in Burlingame and the Tenderloin in the city. We host a homeless shelter in our church through IHN three weeks a year.  The goal of the Commission is for every single church member to be involved in hands-on mission.

Inwardly Strong, Outwardly Focused. Where do you fit in to these two great challenges and rewards from the Lord to change the world for good?

Current Outreach Opportunities

ROCK Recycles for Orphan Compassion Kids
Each Sunday, we are collecting CLEAN aluminum cans and plastic bottles to be redeemed for our kids in Cameroon. Please deposit in the containers in the parking lot on Sundays. This is a combined ministry of ROCK, Creation Care, and Orphan Compassion. Please support our kids at home and abroad.

CALL Primrose Center Wish List & Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to donations of funds and volunteer time, here are some specific items that are currently most needed:

Boxed macaroni and cheese, soup, peanut butter, cereal, canned fruits & vegetables, boxed instant mashed potatoes, tuna, individual/travel sized toiletries, toothbrushes & toothpaste,  diapers (any size), as well as quart, gallon, and sandwich size "ziplock" bags.  We also accept fresh fruits & vegetables from your gardens.

Are you looking for ways to get involved in the community? CALL Primrose has a critical need right now for “shopper” volunteers, willing to commit to one day a week to pick up perishables (purchased and donated) from local stores and businesses. If you might be able to help us with this please contact Mary Watt at contact@callprimrose.org.

Faith In Action Weekend - October 23-24, 2010

In our effort to be inwardly strong and outwardly focused, the Mission Commission is very excited about our upcoming weekend of service and celebration. This will be a completely “hands-on and intergenerational” mission event. On Saturday, October 23 we will be inviting ALL of the church to participate in some type of service opportunity in our community. Join us on Sunday, October 24 between services for our Mission Partners Fair.

To sign up or to learn even more click here.

We are also seeking leaders and volunteers to assist in both the Steering Committee and the activities. If you are interested contact Pastor Henry at 342-0875 ext. 223 or hhansen@burlpres.org.

New Orleans Mission Trip

Imagine if an earthquake struck the Bay Area so hard that you were displaced from your home to live a few hundred miles from the Peninsula. Now consider that five years later you still are unable to return home because there simply is not enough government aid or volunteers to help you. This is the story of at least thirty percent of New Orleans' residents. The effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were that devastating. You can help rebuild the homes of these displaced residents. There will be an orientation in the Upper Room on Sunday, Sept 26th at 12:15 p.m. for those interested in learning more. Questions? Contact Pastor Henry at hhansen@burlpres.org.
