Pastor Beth Frykberg will lead the study and discussion before breaking us up into small groups for further study and reflection. There will also be time for a Talkback to the preaching pastor of the Sunday prior to Wednesday.

Dinner Reservations are required for Body & Soul Dinner. Contact Katy at kgross@burlpres.org or 342-0875 to make your reservations by Monday at 5:00 for Wednesday’s dinner.

New Stephen Ministry Training to Begin Sept. 8

Caring ministry at FPCB will be expanding soon, as up to ten members are set to begin Stephen Minister training on September 8th. At the completion of their training in early March our class will be commissioned as Stephen Ministers. They will join our fourteen active Stephen Ministers (and over 100 others in our church that have been trained since 1987) in providing one on one care to individuals experiencing difficulties in life. The skills our Stephen Ministers learn and practice prepare them to provide a very high level of Christian care giving. The training is intense because it explores some serious life issues, but it is also a growth producing and enjoyable experience. The fifty hours of training is broken down into twenty     2-1/2 hour sessions that will be held on Wednesday evenings after Body and Soul. The training topics include Feelings: Yours Mine and Ours, The Art of Listening, Distinctively Christian Caring, Assertiveness: Relating Gently and Firmly, Maintaining Boundaries, Ministering to Those Experiencing Grief and Caring for People before, during and after Hospitalization. Please lift up the training class in your prayers over the coming months and watch for regular training class updates in The Messenger. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity to grow in your faith as you learn how to be a Stephen Minister please contact Kurt Papenhause at kpapenhause@yahoo.com or 787-3419.

 Substance Abuse Prevention Education
Tuesday, September 14 - 7:00 p.m.
In an ongoing effort to provide support and relevant education for parents and their students, FPCB has invited FCD Educational Services, a nonprofit organization that provides substance abuse prevention education, to join us to provide three different workshops – one for parents, one for 11th and 12th graders and one workshop for younger students. We are aware that drug and alcohol availability and use among teens and pre-teens in our community is high. Parental involvement is crucial to our efforts to reduce the risks teenagers face. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to pose any questions or concerns you may have to experts in the substance abuse prevention field and to encourage your children to attend the age appropriate workshops. Friends and neighbors are welcome. Watch the Messenger for more information or contact Pastor Linda at lgalligan@burlpres.org.

Mount Burlingame
All-Church Retreat October 1-3

Last year’s Mount Burlingame was such a success that we are doing it again!! Come and join us for the best At-Home All Church Retreat EVER! The program begins on Friday, October 1 and will conclude with worship at 10:00 a.m. on October 3.

The speaker for adults will be Scott Dudley, the Senior Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. Many of you will remember Scott as the former College Pastor and then Teaching Pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. Dr. Dudley holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University in English Literature and a Master’s in Divinity from Princeton   Theological Seminary. You will not want to miss the inspirational messages of this incredibly popular motivational speaker and church leader.

The great part about being home is that those who would be unable to attend because of a time specific commitment (like coaching a soccer team) won’t need to miss the whole weekend. Fun activities for all ages are being planned – picnic, sock hop, bridge tournament!

If you have ideas as to how we can make this the “best retreat ever” or want to join our committee please contact Pastor Beth Frykberg at bfrykberg@burlpres.org.

Confirmation Class Begins October 10
Seeking Confirmands & Mentors

Each year our Youth Department offers students the opportunity to explore what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through the confirmation experience. We call this an “experience” because confirmation is not just a class. By developing close friendships with other students and an adult Christian mentor, students will have the chance to engage in a variety of fun, surprising and life-changing learning opportunities that can help them to experience the presence of Jesus Christ like never before. At the end of the experience students decide if they are ready to join the church. Each high school student (confirmand) is paired up with an adult member of the church (mentor) in order to receive guidance and encouragement throughout the confirmation process. The confirmand and mentor are assigned activities and projects to complete together over the six month course timeline. Mentors act as guides, teachers, shepherds, friends and models during the entire class experience. This program has proven to be a life-changing experience for these young people and mentors alike. The spiritual growth and the friendships built in Christ attest to its success. For more information or to sign up for this year’s confirmation experience, please contact Bernie at bjantoc@burlpres.org, or Pastor Linda Sanford Galligan at lgalligan@burlpres.org or call 342-9298 ext. 227. Deadline for registrations is Monday, September 27.

We hope you will join this next class and our journey of discovery. Sign up today as class space is limited. Contact Jackie Gainer at 342-0875 ext. 226 or jgainer@burlpres.org to enroll.

New Orleans Mission Trip
November 7-13,2010

Imagine if an earthquake struck the Bay Area so hard that you were displaced from your home to live a few hundred miles from the Peninsula. Now consider that five years later you still are unable to return home because there simply is not enough government aid or volunteers to help you. This is the story of at least thirty percent of New Orleans' residents. The effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were that devastating. You can help rebuild the homes of these displaced residents. There will be an orientation in the Upper Room on Sunday, Sept 26th at 12:15 p.m. for those interested in learning more. Questions? Contact Pastor Henry at hhansen@burlpres.org.

Musica Sacra Concert - November 28

Please contact Jackie Gainer at 342-0875, ext. 226 or jgainer@burlpres.org with the names of our church family that are serving. Thank you.

eScript for the Nursery School
Your First Presbyterian Church Nursery School raises money through eScrip.  eScrip is an online fundraising organization where you can safely register your credit, debit, Safeway and Macy’s cards. When goods are purchased at participating merchants with any of these cards, a percentage of your purchase is given to our school. Last year the money raised through this program was used for scholarship and teacher education. You can register at www.escrip.com and go to “sign up”.  Our group name is “FPCNS” and our ID number is 395732.  Then register your cards.  It’s that simple and it takes just a few minutes of your time. It is amazing how simple it is to benefit our school. Please help us increase our family enrollment so that we can better help our school and your children.
